FILM SYNOPSIS: In the aftermath of the 1976 Tangshan earthquake, Yuan Ni made the most difficult decision a mother could be asked to make: which child the rescue team should rescue. Yuan Nis daughter Deng, survives but is left as an orphan. The film follows Dengs adoption by a military couple, her life as a medical student, and finally her search for her real family. The film also follows Da growing up with Yuan Ni, becoming a pedi-cab driver, and caring for his mother. Deng and Da are re-united during volunteer rescue efforts after the Sichuan earthquake of 2008.
All films will be screened Saturday mornings at the Glenwood Arts Theatre (9575 Metcalf, Overland Park, KS 66212), and will be accompanied by bilingual introductions and post-screening discussions to explore the cultural, historical, and social issues raised on the screen. Film screenings are free and open to the public.
