In memorial and honor to those killed during the attacks of September 11, 2001 and February 26, 1993, the World Trade Center Memorial, designed by Michael Arad, Handel Architects, has an elegant simplicity that conceals an incredible complexity of architectural design and engineering.
In selecting the winning design, the Memorial Jury stated, "In its powerful, yet simple articulation of the footprints of the Twin towers, "Reflecting Absence" has made the voids left by the destruction the primary symbols of our loss. It is a memorial that expresses both the incalculable loss of life and its consoling renewal, a place where all of us come together to remember from generation to generation."
Michael Arad won the competition to design the World Trade Center Memorial in 2004. Mr. Arad's design was selected from over 5,000 submittals after lengthy deliberations by an independent jury appointed by the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation.
